The famous poem "The World Is Too Much With Us" was composed in 1802 by the great nature poet William Wordsworth. This poem was first published in 1807 in 'Poems In Two Volumes'. It is in the form of a sonnet. Sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines. it is written in Iambic pentameter. It is in the Petrarchan form and its rhyming scheme is abba, abba, cdc, dcd. Wordsworth was very upset after the French Revolution because he had many hopes in the French revolution but they all had lost now. So the poet was very sad to see the people engaged with material things too much. As a result, the poet composed this poem to express his feelings.
The poet says that the people of the country have lost in worldly affairs. They are running after worldly things. Money is everything for them. Nature does not attract them more than money. They all have become materialistic. So the poet is shocked at the poor condition of the people of the country.

Stanza--1
In this stanza, the poet expresses his sad feelings on the condition of the people. He says that people have become so materialistic that nature cannot attract them. They always want to run after money. The main purpose of their life is only earning more and more money. They waste their time only on materialistic things.
They want to buy their happiness by spending money on materialistic things. They waste their time and energy on useless things. They have no time for nature and it's beautiful objects. God has created beautiful objects of nature for human beings but they do not care for it. They are busy only in earning and spending money.
It seems that they have no hearts to feel the beauty of nature. They do not attract by the open sea with falling moonlight on it. They do not impress with the beautiful sights of nature. He says that the moving winds make a noise in the day time and be calm at night like the unmoving flowers at night. These are very attractive scenes of nature but it is very sad that these scenes also cannot attract them because they are engaged in the world of material too much.
They want to buy their happiness by spending money on materialistic things. They waste their time and energy on useless things. They have no time for nature and it's beautiful objects. He further says that he wants to be a Pagan and wants to worship various forms of nature as Sun, Moon, tree, wind, as Gods.
He wants to sit on the meadow like a Pagan. He wants to see Sea God calm down the rising waves by blowing his trumpet. The poet has used the word Proteus. Proteus is the name of sea God who is the son of Poseidon. He wants to see Proteus coming out of the sea. He says that now he does not feel alone in the company of nature. He does not want to be materialistic too much like other people.
The poet wants to be away from the other materialistic people who are engaged in the world of materialism. Thus Wordsworth is a great worshiper of nature. He is very passionate to have a glimpse of nature god at any rate. He is ready to leave any worldly possessions for it.
